Want to see what it's like to be a researcher in Physics at the University of Cambridge? Hey guys, how's it going? I'm back this week, as promised, with a vlog about what I'm doing in labs. I'm currently working as part of the Nanophotonics group at Cambridge University, where I'm completing my Part III project. It's interesting to look back on my time at Cambridge, starting as a Natural Scientist, and specialising all the way up to an experimental Physicist. I must say, I much prefer doing real research to doing a Natural Sciences course! It's fairly draining spending all day in the laboratory, so I occasionally like to pop out to a nearby cafe in West Cambridge to have a break and a snack. Very close to the Cavendish Laboratory (the Physics department at Cambridge), there are some beautiful sights to see. The entire West Cambridge site is extremely pretty in my opinion. At the beginning of the vlog, I had to head to the Jesus College library so that I could do some boring admin work, but hey ho I guess it's gotta be done. I didn't talk a huge amount about badminton and music this week, but I think some of you guys wanted me to do a vlog more focussed on work. I decided I'd talk to you about one of the components in my experimental setup, namely a neutral density filter. A neutral density (or ND) filter is just a poor mirror, and can be used to attenuate the intensity of a beam of light or a powerful laser for various reasons. I'm using it to cut down the power of an extremely high power laser in my setup while I align the beam. Once the experiment is underway, I will remove the ND filter. Interestingly, those of you that make videos will probably also have heard of ND filters because you can get ones designed for cameras so that you can shoot outside when the lighting is too bright! My Weekly Question of the Week for you this week is as follows: What's one thing that you would like to change about yourself, and why? I'm heading down to London this week, so I might add some clips of that into the next vlog! As always, thanks so much for watching. I write all of my own music for these vlogs, and I record it in Garageband. I film my videos on my Canon EOS M10, and edit them in Shotcut, iMovie, and Adobe Lightroom.

Rotoform uses an innovative rotational moulding machine to produce hollow fibreboard products from a sawdust mixture. Rotational moulding is widely used in plastic manufacturing, with the ability to form thin hollow products allowing lightweight and novel designs. The team has adapted this technology, using an original machine to maximise spinning speeds. Combining this capability with the use of sawdust allows Rotoform to produce a similar range of fantastic products but using eco-friendly fibreboard materials Using sawdust is part of what makes Rotoform unique. Sawdust is a waste material – 0.4 million tonnes are produced and disposed of every year. Rotoform takes this sawdust and enables the production of eco-friendly products. Achieving the rotational speeds necessary to use the viscous sawdust mixtures was the most significant challenge the team had to overcome. Traditional rotational moulding machines reach rotational speeds of 60 rpm. Rotoform has designed a more rigid machine, which employs powerful motors allowing stable, high speed rotation. Development of the optimal mixture required lengthy testing, but the ideal ratios of fibres, PVA and water were finally found. This allowed us to minimise drying times and maximise the strength of the fibreboard. A multitude of shaped products can be formed: lampshades, lunchboxes, fruit bowls, stationery pots, etc. The ability to change the inner surface of the mould gives Rotoform a unique selling point. Additionally fibreboard is easily machined and coated, giving the opportunity for post-forming shaping and finishing methods that would be impossible with existing rotationally moulded polymer components. The use of waste material combined with the ability to form unique, monocoque fibreboard structures enables Rotoform to produce exciting premium products which would be difficult to manufacture in any other way. Backed by the Cambridge Independent, the initiative encourages students to consider courses and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
